PKIDS Communications Made Easy- Social Media: Creating Podcasts

What is a podcast? Having little to do with either peas or science fiction films, a podcast is an audio file available on the Internet that people can download to portable devices or computers to listen to later. Podcasts are a great way to share your news and information when images aren’t necessary to convey your message.

In this webcast, we will give tips for developing good audio content and vocal delivery skills for podcasts. We will discuss free and low-cost options for recording, producing, and sharing audio podcasts, then demonstrate from start to finish how to create and place a podcast online. Examples of podcasts related to public health education will be posted on the PKIDs networking site http://network.pkids.org/

Alison Aldrich is Technology Outreach Coordinator with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region. She has been a health sciences librarian for eight years and also has a degree in public health education. Alison’s job rarely involves books, shelves, or shushing people. Instead, she teaches librarians and public health workers about emerging technologies and the best places to find health information online.

Originally from rural Ohio, Alison moved to Seattle in 2007. She enjoys being outdoors, volunteering, knitting, and watching other peoples’ cats.

Nikki Dettmar is the Education and Assessment Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region. Her focus is primarily on effective and innovative distance learning practices in our classes and evaluation measures. Nikki received a fellowship to study health informatics and graduated with a Master’s in Information Science via distance learning in 2007.  Her undergraduate work was in Communications and she was both a DJ and news director of her college station.

Nikki gave up being a 5th generation native Californian and has lived in Seattle for 12 years. She enjoys geocaching (hunting for hidden Tupperware using a cell phone), organizing data for Cub Scouts, genealogy and gardening.

The mission of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) is to advance the progress of medicine, improve public health, and reduce health disparities by improving access to quality health information. The program is coordinated by the National Library of Medicine and carried out through a nationwide network of health science libraries and information centers.
