Our August webinar will provide an overview of the 2014-15 influenza season and information about this year’s flu vaccine communication campaign plan for the general public along with new materials that will assist with reaching Hispanic, African American and American Indian/Alaska Native populations.

SPEAKERS:

Joseph Bresee, M.D., FAAP, is chief of the Epidemiology and Prevention Branch in CDC’s Influenza Division, and is a captain in the U.S. Public Health Service. His branch is responsible for conducting influenza surveillance, working to understand influenza disease burden, helping to derive appropriate vaccine and antiviral use policies to prevent seasonal influenza, detecting and preventing avian influenza and pandemic influenza, and providing technical expertise to global public health partners.

Dr. Bresee trained at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and then completed his Pediatric Residency at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Bresee joined CDC in 1993 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer in the Influenza Branch. From 1995 to 2005, Dr. Bresee first served as a staff epidemiologist and medical officer, specializing in viral gastrointestinal infections and respiratory infections. Subsequently, he was promoted to Epidemiology Team Lead. His research and public health activities focused on rotavirus disease and rotavirus vaccines, and he worked to ensure that rotavirus vaccines were available for children in both the U.S. as well as those living in developing countries.

Dr. Bresee continues to work as a general pediatrician on staff at Grady Healthcare. He attends a weekly clinic that serves an underserved population in Atlanta. Dr. Bresee has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and textbook chapters

Cindy Fowler is health communication specialist in the Health Communication Science Office for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia.  She has served the CDC for the past 11 years in numerous capacities, focusing most of her efforts in managing and supporting national campaign work, including influenza and childhood vaccines. She supports emergency preparedness and response activities, such as the 2013 H7N9 influenza outbreak response and served on CDC’s 2009 H1N1 Influenza Vaccine Task Force Communication Team.

Carlos Velázquez, MA  has been in the health field for more than 20 years designing and implementing national and local prevention programs in the US and abroad.  His work in health disparities has touched upon issues related to HIV/AIDS, tobacco control, food insecurity, and immunization. Mr.Velázquez is the Vice President of Community Engagement for HMA Associates, in Washington, DC and he is currently overseeing the CDC’s communications initiative for grassroots social marketing to promote influenza immunization to disparate populations.   He has developed partnerships in 45 target markets to coordinate media events, orchestrate flu vaccine clinics, and to broaden the campaign message reach through social media platforms.
