Clinical Vaccinology Course

This course focuses on new developments and issues related to the use of vaccines. Expert faculty will provide the latest information on both current and prospective vaccines through lectures and interactive case presentations. Leading infectious disease experts, pediatricians, and researchers will discuss newly available vaccines and vaccines in the pipeline, as well as established vaccines whose continued administration is essential to improving disease prevention efforts.

This course is specifically designed for physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, vaccine program administrators, and other health professionals involved with or interested in the clinical use of vaccines. It will also be of interest to health care professionals involved in the prevention and control of infectious diseases, such as federal, state, and local public health officials. Course participants should have a knowledge of or interest in vaccines and vaccine-preventable diseases.

  • Is Social Media for Your Organization? Northern Nevada Immunization Coalition discusses their experience with social media, how they got involved with it and why it’s still an important component of their outreach efforts.
  • Is Anyone Out There? The Ups and Downs of Virtual Networking. Virtual Immunization Communication Network (VICNetwork) shares their ongoing experiences with social media, the challenges they have overcome, and the resources that have helped them along the way.
  • I’m Here, Now What Do I Do? Now that your organization has started using social media platforms, get ideas on how to engage your followers. PKIDs will share ideas from programs that have been successful in reaching stakeholders and making an impact in vaccine awareness. This presentation will also include a review of free online tools available to coalitions across the country.

Virtual Immunization Communication Network (VICNetwork)

Nicoletta Rousseva – Program Associate: Nicoletta manages the VICNetwork social media sites, website and blog, and works alongside the VICNetwork team to produce quarterly webinars. Nicoletta is currently working toward a Master’s degree in Art History at the University of California, Davis. She is interested in studying the integration of new media and technology into the visual arts and how virtual platforms change our definition of the aesthetic.

Northern Nevada Immunization Coalition (A program of CHW/Saint Mary’s)

Heidi S. Hurst, MA – Director: With more than 15 years’ experience in nonprofit program management and marketing, Heidi has been NNIC’s director since 2007. Having utilized Facebook previously at the University of Nevada, she saw benefit in its use to raise awareness and advocate for immunizations, and subsequently developed a Facebook Group for Immunize Nevada in 2007. Heidi also uses her passion and belief in social media as a communication platform to benefit local nonprofits including Tune In To Kids and YNPN of Northern Nevada. She has launched and administers social media profiles for these organizations, as well as maintains a blog about the challenges and rewards of raising a child with ADHD.

Emily Stratton – Marketing and Project Coordinator: As a coordinator at NNIC, Emily manages traditional and social marketing, public relations, media relations, event coordinating, and statewide and community outreach. Prior to Immunize Nevada, Emily worked at a boutique public relations and marketing firm in Reno, NV where she served as the account executive managing and assisting with a variety of clients. In 2008, Emily graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of Nevada, Reno, with an emphasis in public relations and a minor in speech communications.

Dawn A Crawford – Outreach Coordinator: Dawn has dedicated her career to nonprofit communications. Before joining PKIDs, she served in various communications leadership roles for the Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition, Exempla Healthcare, and the Kempe Foundation. A true communicator at heart, she has found her niche in social media where she is a weaver of words and a passionate community builder. Dawn holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She gardens to make the world a more beautiful place and lives every day as if it were her last.
